Sculpture

Plaster Casting

During our first workshop, we created a clay sculpture. I decided to make a dog's head. This was my first time doing anything like this and I really enjoyed trying something new. I struggled at first and didn't know where to start but once I got going I started to have fun. Once I was happy with my clay sculpture, I placed shims down the centre to create a barrier for when I make the mould.

During week two I made the mould. I added plaster to water until little islands of plaster started to form on the surface. I then mixed the plaster with the water and quickly began flicking the mixture onto my clay sculpture. Once I had made a thick enough mould, I smoothed over the surface. This was then left for graham to take apart and fill with plaster ready for our third and final week.

In our final sculpture workshop I used a blunt screwdriver and hammer to crack open the mould to reveal my completed sculpture. My mould hadn't fully hardened, however, so I had to spend a bit more time picking out plaster from all the nooks and crannies.
